Summary: The article discusses the public responsibilities which have been taken on by many private corporations operating in developing countries. In such environments, firms may need to provide services which are normally part of the public sector, such as health care and education, since the governments of many developing nations are too feckless and corrupt to do so. The article cites several case studies of firms facing such challenges, and analyzes four basic strategies which these firms tend to adopt. The advantages and drawbacks of each strategy are discussed.
