Special Economic Zones (SEZs) were set up in India with the intention of promoting exports and creating employment. But, exports from SEZs have declined to 23% in 2005-06 from 39% in 2003-04. This article focuses on the performance of SEZs in India and other countries, and also throws light on some of the upcoming issues in the allotment of SEZs.
