The term `hedge funds' originated in the year 1949 when Alfred Winslow Jones maintained a leveraged long stock position with a portfolio consisting of short stocks. This was done to take advantage of incentive fee structure. A collection of capital that is pooled from a small number of wealthy individuals or institutions which is managed by a manager or a small team is known as a hedge fund.
