The influence of civil society, the not-for-profit sector, and non-governmental organizations on a country's transition from a state-controlled economy to a market economy is discussed, as well as the role of multinational business enterprises in the formation of civil-society institutions and on the stabilization of socioeconomic conditions in BRIC countries. The state's role in intervening and regulating its national economy in statist capitalism is also discussed.
