Summary, etc A teacher fondly called as a ‘Preceptor’ who<br/>dispels the dullness of intellect and leads one to<br/>the path of enlightenment has been looked upon<br/>with awe and inspiration from times immemorial.<br/>As the needs of the learner has become more and<br/>more expansive and demanding now the teacher<br/>has multiple roles to play and is needed to have<br/>multi-faceted skills to live up to the expectation<br/>of the learner. Formerly teaching was chosen as a<br/>career with interest and teacher was revered as a<br/>respectable citizen of the society. There was a<br/>stop gap when teaching became a forced vocation<br/>if one did not get a better opportunity.<br/>Now with education becoming more and more<br/>holistic there is need for teachers who are<br/>facilitators, mentors and multi-talented. The<br/>paper examines the changing role of a teacher<br/>who has a multi-dimensional approach to his/her<br/>profession. The paper looks at how teaching in<br/>the current scenario is gaining momentum as a<br/>sought after career with better scope for<br/>expanding the ‘Knowledge Horizon’. Great<br/>teachers are made because of their expertise w.r.t<br/>knowledge, domain, attitude, dedication,<br/>sincerity, accountability and transparency. Their<br/>roles are not limited to class room teaching but go<br/>much beyond that as men and women of grit who<br/>shape the youth to become globally competent to<br/>face the real challenges of the world and extend<br/>their helping hands in ‘Nation Building’. Real<br/>life examples of great teachers would be included<br/>in the paper as case studies to show how<br/>‘Teaching Profession was given a new and<br/>exciting dimension by these icons.’
